Did you realize NHTF track and field season is not yet over??? Have you been watching the Olympic Trials at historic Hayward Field at University of Oregon in Eugene? And did you know high school’s Outdoor Nationals, which has been in North Carolina the past several years, has been picked up by Nike and moved to Hayward?
It takes place this week and NH is sending 4 of its best!! Concord Christian’s Shane Wang, NH State Record Holder in the Triple Jump (48’2.5″) leads off competing on Thursday in Flight 3 beginning at 1:30pm Pacific Coast time. Wang, the most recent WMUR Hometown Hero, has taken the state by storm with his double win at MOCs including the state record leap in the Triple.
On Friday, our other state record breaker, Merrimack Valley’s Seth Baylus will settle into the blocks in Heat 7 of the prelims of the 100 meters, which begin at 9:20am Pacific Coast time. Baylus proved he certainly belongs at nationals with his 10.77 state record!
The Cox kids have opted to compete in the 5000 meters which begins with the ladies on Saturday at 9:30am Pacific time. Although they qualified for the 2 mile, their decision may prove beneficial looking at the latest forecast for high temps in the afternoon for the 2 mile races. Both have made Section 2 of their events, the fast section.
Division 2 and Meet of Champions champion, Addison Cox is coming off a dominant spring season where she did not lose a race in the 1600 and 3200. She has posted a personal record of 10:30 and is coming off a strong 3rd place showing at the East Coast Championships last week. But the 5k may be her strongest distance as she was the D2 and MOC champ in cross country as well.
Addison’s younger brother, Aidan Cox, also had a stellar season by virtue of being undefeated at the 3200 meter distance and breaking the D2 record in the process. He followed that up with winning the East Coast title last week and dropping a blazing fast 9:00.75 in the process. Of note, when one peruses the entry lists you will notice Varun Oberjai from Phillips Exeter Academy also in the same section as Aidan. Oberjai, from Singapore and headed to Yale next fall, is an incredible runner himself and has shared many a training run with Aidan.
Both Baylus and the Cox’s have agreed to share their experiences with us via Instagram stories as well as some YouTube uploads throughout the week. So please show support by checking these out!
Best of all, as always, the Nationals offers a FREE WEBCAST so everyone can share in the excitement! Check it out!
